My check engine light was on so I took the car and had it diagnosed and the mechanic said I needed a new fuel cap and a coolant temperature sensor. I agreed to the repairs but the following day the light light went back on?

Hello,

Do you happen to know what were the codes before the repair was performed?

Best course of action would be to scan the vehicle again and retrieve the code(s).
It is possible that there could be something that was overlooked.

With the codes we will be able to accurately diagnose the issue and could let you know the next step.
I am assuming one of the codes was for EVAP leak. Keep in mind that the EVAP leak code can be for a bad gas cap, but then again it could be due to another leaking component or stuck open vent valve.

Please let me know the code(s) that you currently have.
Thank you.
