My mechanic took out the 4-wheel drive shaft from my 2004 Mazda Tribute. He told me that there are metal shavings in the transfer case and the drive shaft was causing increasing damage to the transfer case. Can I drive my SUV without the 4-wheel drive shaft, and will the transfer case in this condition cause additional problems for my vehicle?

If there is metal in the transfer oil, I would not be driving as this will only do more damage, this will have to be repaired as if not you will run the risk of doing further expensive damage.

Can this be repaired without replacing the transfer case? I was told this part is at least $1300.00.

It should be able to be repaired, but I would recommend a full over haul.
