I'm looking for a car and came across an ad for a 2004 Ford Taurus with 165000 miles on it. They're asking $2300 for it. They say the only thing wrong with it is a loose exhaust shield that rattles sometimes. Does anyone know what that is and is it expensive to fix? Also, is $2300 is reasonable?

Thanks!

Some shields are welded to the exhaust system and some are bolted to the body right over the exhaust system. The repairs usually involve a new bolt with a washer, a little welding, or a new clamp. If the repair was that simple, they would have done it.

No one in my circle of friends drives a Ford product. They are not tops in power, fuel mileage, or ease of repair. What they are tops in is steering and suspension parts that separate leading to loss of control and crashes. You will want to have those systems inspected before you buy the car, at least once a year, and every time you hear a new rattle or clunk. The people at tire and alignment shops do this every day.
