Random oil light flashing

We keep up on maintenance. It has around 172,000 miles mostly hwy. Miles.I have 2004 Chrysler plain p.T. Cruiser, 2.4L. About 3 mo. Ago the oil light started coming on at any time it wanted to. Even after oil changes. When it does this we can smell oil. Please tell me what is wrong and what I need to do. Thank you.

First have the actual pressure tested with a mechanical pressure gauge. If it's normal, suspect the sending unit.

Indeed do check the oil pressure sending unit. I have a pontiac that did the same thing and was leaking oil from it. The oil causes a ground with the body with the car to close the circut to give you the faulty light condition.
