The fittings and electrical connectors come off in different directions. That suggests the tanks might be close to a cross member that is in the way or the exhaust system runs nearby and the hoses are routed to avoid them. Some vehicles are designed to allow the optional or future use of all-wheel-drive, and the fuel tank would have to be relocated away from where the rear drive shaft would run through.
