Linkage, shifter or cable, hopefully not the trans. Look under the hood while someone moves the shifter (can be done with car off) see if anything moves, if not work your way back to the shifter

When there is insufficient voltage, it can cause difference in performance and harsh shifting.

If you have rectified the charging problem, reset the PCM and allow it to relearn before checking the ignition timing. That would be most accurate.

I had a new clutch put in last summer (2007). Everything was working until recently. The gears are hard to change when running but eventually it will change gears smoothly. When not running, the gears change easily. What could be the diagnosis?

I would suspect the clutch as the source of this issue, did the installer offer a warranty?

An individual put the clutch in and he can not be reached at this time. So unfortunately there is not a warranty.

It may also be an issue with the clutch hydraulic system.

If all gears are easy to shift iinto with engine running but vehicle stationary, try changing the gear oil.

The gears are hard to shift into when engine is running and vehicle stationary. The gears are only easy to change when the engine is off. Could it be something minor since a clutch had been put in last summer?

Hi n210ss,

The disc is releasing too slow from the clutch shaft. If the clutch is not too low and the hydraulics are ok, either during installation the shaft was not clean well and lubricated or the shaft has accumulated rust.

Transmission problem 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 170000 miles

My transmission has started to make a grinding, metal-on-metal sounding noise whenever I push in the clutch pedal. The RPMs also drop, sometimes stalling the engine. This happens only when the clutch pedal is pressed in, whether in gear or not. When I release the clutch pedal, the noise stops completely. I first suspected the clutch release bearing, and I replaced it as well as the pilot bearing, but it did not change the problem in any way.

My vehicle is a 1991 Mazda Protege LX. It has the 1.8 L DOHC and 5-speed manual transmission.

If this noise is mostly at the front of the tranny close to the engine best check the pressure plate or clutch cover-you still have to go back in and investigate-also inspect the pilot bushing/bearing again

Well, I've got the tranny removed again and I've inspected the clutch and the bearings. Everything seems to be fine, including the pressure plate, flywheel, etc. That's why this problem stumps me.

Transmission bearing probably. If it stops grinding when you press on the clutch its the transmission bearing but if it grinds when you press on the clutch well its the pilot bearing.
