Transmission problem
1997 Mazda Protege 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi,
My 1997 mazda protege will not shift out of park. I have tried the emergency button to release the shifter. Also I have removed the cable and it has freedom of travel. The Shifter will shift out of park when the cable is disconnected. The Brake lights do not come on now. I replaced the brake light switch and still no luck. The switch has voltage and their is continuity back to the light bulb. Could the shift lock actuator be causing this or is it a relay. Any idea's appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi mazdaprotegewi,

Thank you for the donation.

When the brake lights do not work, the shift interlock solenoid would not be activated to allow the shifter to be shifted.

You would have to get the brake light problem resolved first.

At brake switch, disconnect wire connector and use a jumper to join the power supply and brake light wire terminal. If the bvrake light comes on, the brake switch is faulty. Was the replaced unit OEM?

At the same time, test if you are able to shift out of park with ignition switch turned ON.
