I have a 2003 ford explorer 4.6 4x4 automatic not all time 4x4 but automatic when needed in auto 4x4 mode while driving after about 5 miles it starts******** like 4x4 is trying to activate even though not needed. Will not do in 4 high or 4 lo dont set a code what could be the problem

The A4wd is actuated by speed sensors, one front, one rear. If the sensor thinks one of the axles is turning faster than the other, it will engage the 4wd. Therefore, I believe one of the sensors is going bad. Have them checked.
