2002 4 runner, when I put it in 4WD it stays in even when I put it back in 2WD

I havent used the 4wd for about 3 months the dealer wants $2000 for a new acuator what else can I do to fix it

Maybe you've tried this, but if not, put it in 4wd, then back into 2wd and back up at least 50 ft, relatively quickly (speed of backing up that is). Don't run over anyone or anything when doing this please.
