My car will only start when the gear is in neutral

My car will only start when the gear is in neutral. The mechanic installed a trasmission and after getting the car back, its not starting again unless the gear is in neutral. Its a 2002 impala. Thanks

Hello,

It sounds like an issue with the neutral safety switch.
The neutral safety switch prevents the vehicle from starting in any gear other than park or neutral.
A faulty switch will trigger starting issues, just like what you are experiencing.
The neutral safety stich is located on the transmission housing.
