2002 Cavalier runs rought with A/C on

I have a 2002 cavalier that pulses when the a/c is on, tach goes from 800 to 1400, but when you shut a/c off runs just fine

Does the engine rpms actually surge, can you feel it, regardless of the tach? The rpms should go up some with the ac on, not that much. Any applicable trouble codes? How long since a tune-up? I may have to use a separate method to check rpms, see if it matches your tach?
