When filling my gas tank, after a couple of gallons, it will stop every 1/4 gallon. And I have to wait 10 or 20 seconds. And then put in another 1/4 Gallon at a time. This is the second fill up in a row with this problem. Should I shove a coat hanger down the fill tube? Could I damage something that way? I have a locking gas cap so no one could have put something in the tank.

You are getting an airlock in the tank, the venting system is faulty, get that look at, don't go shoving anything down the filler, you may end up in deeper "stuff"

We have a 1999 Hyundai Accent GL for 13 years, bought it new, still original owner and we take great care of it, runs great. Have this same problem a year ago and found out many others do too. It is usually the charcoal canister. What happens is this canister is filled with pellets and over time the screen gets old and the charcoal pellets start leaking out. We bought a new charcoal canister, valve canister close, valve Assy-fuel vent and a purge valve. Our mechanic replaced all these and blew the lines out as he went along. If you go to youtube and look up charcoal canister you can see demos of it. After much research, this seems to be a common problem. The parts came to $375.00 and my personal mechanic charged me $55.00 to do the work. Don't know what a shop charges and I bought all the parts from the Hyundai Dealer parts store as the canister isn't carried at the auto parts store. Problem is solved, engine light no longer on and gas goes in just fine.
Have your car checked out and ask them about the charcoal canister and parts I mentioned above.
