I have a 2000 pontiac sunfire that only starts if you hold the gas pedal to the floor. It idles rough and has white smoke comming from the exhaust that smells like sulphur.

Usually if you hold the pedal down, it leans out the fuel system. Use a gage and check fuel pressure. Also, see if pressure holds after pump stops.

If think there is an exhaust issue, drop the exhaust, see if it idles any better? Any applicable trouble codes? How long since a tune-up?

The white smoke sound like coolant getting into the combustion chamber.
