Previous to my breakdown I was having trouble getting it into gear and a bit of gear grinding but I just chocked it up to the cold. Last night I was driving in 5th gear and all of a sudden the engine rev'd really high even though it did not pop out of gear. I put it in neutral and tried putting it in a lower gear with no luck. I wasn't able to get the transmission into any gear. If I let out on the clutch even when in neutral the engine stalled. There was a burning smell when I exited the car. There was no more driving it.

It sounds like the clutch is slipping, at that point it needs to be replaced.

I am hoping it is my clutch but wouldn't I still be able to get the car in gear? Right now it is not going in any of the gears.

Yes, you may also have some synchronizer issues also. It would be best to either have a trans specialist check it out or just replace the trans and clutch together
