I had a customer come into my shop looking for help in getting his tachometer to work in his 1998 jeep. He has installed a late model GM LS engine with the LS computer, now everything works but the tach. He still has the original computer and sensor, it is in it's originai position. There is no way for the tach. Sensor to receive a signal from the rear of the engine any longer. We are trying to figure a way to have the sensor pick up off of the vibration damper. How many pick up points do we need. There were eight slots in the rear two groups of four 180 degrees apart. How many are necessary to activate the tach? He has moved his sensor to a location to the front of the engine. How far from the surface does the sensor have to be? What must the surface consist of, how must this be cnfigured to operate the tach only? Can this be done?
Thanks Don

Motor swaps always are fun. I just add one in a 1990 Integra and fortunately I am running an MSD box. You can pick a bomb great position from either the crank or even a distributor. In an MSD box the trigger signal is picked up from the distributor. Most great position sensors urban uses seven magnets. I think MSD make said Craig position sensor that is any easy bolt on for the LS motor. Try summitracing. Com or the MSD website. It is kind of overkil for just a Tach. The MSD 6AL box is probably about the same price and you could give him a hottter spark, also need a SS blaster coil $40, and solve the Tach issue by using the tach output on the box. The MSD 6AL goes for about $150 or so. You might not be able to get the stock tach to work with it though.
The only thing that I can think of off the top of my head is making a setup with a pair of magnets and a lot of research into online forums for enthuisiasts or seeing if an Older model, "Super Jeep", setup would work.

I hope this helps.
