I have a clicking noise every time I accelerate, it goes away when decelerating. My mechanic said it possibly could be the starter became disconnected from the flywheel. How would you repair that?

That is not the problem, the starter is not connected to the flywheel with the engine running, I would be looking at a loose brake pad, or a faulty drive shaft or a loose suspension component, this sounds like a weight shift noise.
