98 Grand Prix

My grand prix fires up but when I shift into gear everything shuts down. The engine dies as well as the electrical system. If I jump the car it will start again but as soon as I shift it kills it. It will start again no problem if I just turn it off with the key. My guess is its an electrical issue. Maybe a sensor that has to do with the shifter. Please advise

You need a jump to start the engine
it will stall and will not start until you get a jump
and if so, need to check charging system and alternator
check battery terminals
check fuses
