I have a 98' Dodge Neon that has a squealing noise coming from under the hood, it seems to only squeal when it is cold or when I have the rear defrost going. I have changed my belts but it still has the squeal, I was told that it might be my alternator but want a second opinion. Please help.

Usually I use a long piece of metal, maybe a extra long shank screwdriver. Place the tip on an accessory body, you know, like power steering--ac comp-- alternator, whatever. The other end of metal shank, I place on that bone behind my ear, it magnifies the sound for me, helps me locate where the sound is coming from. You need to be careful not to get tool or anything caught up in belts--pulleys-- fan-- or anything.

I was also told that if it was the alternator, it would lose all kinds of power. Thank you for your reply.

If you have a voltmeter or charge indicator on the dash, that should react if there is a charging system problem? Of course that doesn't mean it can't still make a noise.
