I have a 1997 nissan altima, the other day I was driving and pulled in to a parking lot and as I stopd I noticed white smoke coming from under hood. I assumed I was over heating but my gauge never went up. My friends dad came and put coolant in it and the smoke stopd. A few hours later it did it again. A man at a gass stattion said I seem to be over heating but the ratiator was not hot and he was able to leave his hand on it as smoke was still coming out. What is the problem? My fans arent coming on either. Please help! Im 18 years old and dont want to be raked over the coals at a repair shop.

You need to get a coolant pressure tester and locate the source of the coolant leak. It may be something as simple as a pinhole in a coolant hose that is spraying on something hot, creating smoke. Maybe a parts store will loan out a pressure tester, might be worth checking in to.
