So this morning I try turning on the heat and it wouldn't turn on. All that was coming out was cold air. So after a while of driving I realized that white smoke started coming out the ac wents. This is the first time that has happened. And I've noticed recently that the heat has been taking a while to turn on. I was wondering what could possibly be wrong.

Try pulling hvac fuse inside car it may be the actutator needs to be reset or isn't working. Of course if you set the temp it's auto temp control and will need to be scanned for codes. Don't worry about the smoke.

So I got back in the car and after 5 mins of driving the heat came on and started working reallly well. Then I went to clean the car under the hood and I found a sponge next to radiator, wondering if that could be the problem too.

Hard telling I don't think the sponge could have done anything but least your heat works so you are ok then.

Someone told me that there could be air in the coolant pipes. And that white smoke means burning coolant.

No if there was air it would take a while to het up which may have been your problem all along. The smoke may have been moisture from the a/c then heat went on and vaporized it. Don't worry about it. People will tell you all kinds of stuff as they don't know what they are talking about anyhow.
