I have a 97 chevy 1500 and was wondering if I could take the rearend and drive train off of a chevy 2500 to take a little strain off the half ton components

First, I have to say we only recommend direct fit parts. Now, anything is possible. However, is it worth the effort is the question. The change you are suggesting is going to cause several issues with computers, sensors, mounts, wiring harnesses. Can it be done, yes, but is it worth the effort? I would say no.
