I have been told by a local mechanic that one of the pistons is not firing in my 1996 Escort. The check engine light blinks when I drive and I have reduced power. The mechanic suggested a new engine or to junk the car. Can it be something else?

Has he done a compression test on your engine? If not he need's to do that before he can say that engine failure is causing the miss fire. What are the exact code number's your car has? What test's has he done to say it's the engine?
