My 1995 volkswagon passat is stuck in reverse and second gear. On jack stands one wheel goes forward and the other front wheel spends backwards. What's the solution?

SOUNDS SOMETHINGS WRONG WITH YOUR SHIFT RAILS IN THE TRANNY

IMMA JEEP CJ GUY AND UNDERSTAND THEIR TRANNY WELL---MANY DIFFERENT RIGS WORK VERY SIMILAR IN THE WAY THAT SHIFT FORKS SHIFT----EVERYBODY HAS THEIR OWN DESIGN

I'M GUESSING REVERSE AND 2ND ARE ON THE SAME RAIL?

THE ONE WHEEL GOING ONE WAY AND THE OTHER IS NORMAL FOR ANY VEHICLE WITH A "STANDARD DIFFERENTIAL"VEHICLES WITH POSITIVE TRACTION DIFFERENTIALS MOVE THE WHEELS IN THE SAME DIRECTION, WHEN IT'S IN THE AIR

SOME TIMES EITHER SHIFT RAILS OR OTHER THINGS HANG UP AND THE BIND KEEPS IT FROM MOVING

INSURE YOUR CLUTCH HAS FLUID AND "FEELS RIGHT"

I'M NOT TELLING YOU TO ABUSE YOUR RIG---WITH THE CLUTCH IN AND A QUICK---BUT GENTLE--- SMACK ON THE SHIFTER WITH A RUBBER MALLET OR BLOCK OF WOOD---WITH THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED MAY MAKE IT GO IN

I'M GONNA SHOW YOU HOW A "REAL SHIFTER" WORKS---THIS IS MY 1977 JEEP CJ 5 W/ A 3 SPEED IT IS REAL SIMPLE

IT'S DESIGNED IN AN "H" PATTERN ---REVERSE AND 1ST ARE ON ONE RAIL2ND AND 3RD ARE ON THE OTHER

IT IS MADE SO THAT "A" --((("THE STICK" THIS SQUARE IS THE OTHER END OF THE STICK THAT THE SHIFT K. NOB IS ON))) "A" CAN MOVE LEFT OR RIGHT ONLY AND FIT INTO THE "CUTOUT" OF ONE RAIL OR THE OTHER ----"B" AND "C"

IN THE PIC I HAVE THE SHIFT FORK OVER EXTENDED SO I COULD INSTALL THE PIN--NORMALLY THE CUTOUT LOOKS LIKE THE OTHER ONE WHEN ROLLED BACK

ONLY ONE RAIL MOVES AT A TIME (UNLESS!)

THINGS THAT COULD GO WRONG WITH IT ARE :

THE "STICK BREAKS OFF" (AT THE BOTTOM END) "A" IS THE OTHER END OF THE STICK (THE OTHER END IS THE K. NOB)--NOTHING SHIFTS FROM WHERE IT WAS LAST POSITIONEDYOU ARE STUCK IN EITHER NEUTRAL OR 1ST OR 2ND OR 3RD

MEGA WEAR HAPPENS AND FINALLY THE SHIFTER WILL POSSIBLY LET THE RAILS SHIFT INTO POSITIONS THEY SHOULDN'T

THE PINS (LIKE I'M INSTALLING IN THE PIC) BREAK---AND ALLOW THE SHIFT FORK TO MOVE INDEPENDENTLY ON THE RAILTHIS AND THE POSSIBILITY ABOVE THIS MIGHT ALLOW 2 GEARS TO BE ENGAGED AT ONE TIME----TRANNY WILL LOCK UP AND NOTHING CAN "NORMALLY MOVE"

THE FORK COULD WEAR INTO---OR BREAKONE RAIL WOULD NOT SHIFT FROM WHATEVER POSITION IT WAS IN, WHEN IT BROKE

THIS SORTA "EXHIBITS" OR "MIMICS" THE SITUATION YOU HAVEONE RAIL MOVES---THE OTHER DON'T----THE OTHER SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL WHEN IT FAILED TO OPERATETHIS IS JUST A GUESS----YOURS IS PROBABLY A LOT MORE COMPLICATED THAN MINE. BUT PERFORMING THE SAME JOB!

IF YOU ARE NOT MECHANICAL----THIS IS A MISSION FOR SOMEONE WHO IS

YOUR TURN
