Intake valve clearances are withing specs but for exhaust, # 1 and ! 3 are out of specs.

Wow, I never seen like that of my car's no adjustment valve, same like a Honda motorcycle's engine. Why Toyota made 5S-FE engines without valve adjustments? Only shims can replace for different size.0984" to.1299". So, I will reduce size for adjust. I must remove shims to measure size to reduce for valve clearance.

Clearance adjustment is by changing the shim thickness and this is the way it is designed to be adjusted. This system requires minimal maintenance and valve adjustment is seldom required.

Each design has its advantages and disadvantages. Even hydraulical self adjusting system has its problems so I would not fault it on Toyota.

All right, this is time for not easy to find anything what wrong with Toyota Camry. I done to change current size of valve shim. Then to start engine few minutes, idle seem look good for high rpm for cold start engine. So, I drove the car, few minutes smooth and then stop at stop sign. It still misfire idle few sec, then no misfire 5 sec, and agian misfire few sec. I don't know why these car go same things, I done to replace valve shim already. Last night, I saw the engine light come out one time, it say Code 71. My god, why? I already cleaning and EGR seem good seal and took off EGR valve out of unplug nothing on mount of air intake body plus block the hole with plate with test idle still same things. It misfire something.

What you have now seems to be the code 71 causing the intermittent misfiring.

Code is set when EGR gas temperature is 158°F (70°C) or less for 50 seconds when engine coolant is 176°F (80°C) or more. Possible causes are:

l EGR gas temperature sensor open circuit.
L EGR VSV open or short circuit.
L EGR vacuum hose disconnected.
L Clogged EGR passage.
L ECM.

I look online of many people of world, they do have problem same thing happened to me, that reason why I trying to find out what with Camry's engine wrong. Look and read online.

"Well. I love my Camry. But the engine light has been on forever now. The code reads Exhaust Gas Recirculation, but I had a mechanic check it and say it works fine."

There isn't anything wrong with the car but the check engine is definitely annoying. Also it seems like a common problem among Toyotas. Replacing the EGR valve doesn't seem to solve it.

There are 5 possibilities as listed in my previous replies and any of them could be the cause.

Not many mechanics are well versed in this systyem and don't even know how and where to start so it is not surprising that the problem is not resolved.

1. EGR gas temperature sensor was a wrong measure of ohms, Failed. Too early 150' degree at 4 ohms reading. That must be over 300' degree at between 2-4 ohms.
2. EGR VSV was good voltage, but still not good and clog so bad inside of air flows from E to port G, Failed and stuck in holes.
3. EGR vacuum hose was all good connection hoses with all current lines.
4. Clogged EGR passage was clean all the parts done.
5. ECM was replaced at last year.

I already to order the EGR gas temp sensor, VSV switch and EGR Modulator too. Because EGR Modulator very bad cloged too. Wow, it so crazy problem of Toyota techonlogy as grasp !

The VSV should be initial cause and start of the problem. When vacuum is not available or insufficient, it can cause a lot of problem.

This is not Toyota technology alone, almost all other makes have a problem with or are difficult to diagnose emission controls, especially for the earlier pre-Y2K models.

At least we are getting somehwere and the answer should be close.

Happy New Year, And I really so upset of my car Camry not getting better at all, funny. I replaced new VSV control, EGR gas temp sensor, and EGR Modulator. It seem that I found out the engine stalling after stop on the road. So, I pull over the side road for checking out, that I pull off the vacuum hose on top EGR Valve sound like hold so enough, then I heard vacuum air release of EGR start close. "Pop!" I drove again same thing stalling second time, Remove hose of EGR Vacuum to release sound, "Pop again!" So, I don't use EGR Valve without vacuum hose. I drove on the road till no stall, back home at park alot. I believe the VSV system not working property, something not right with ECU. These car still misfire at idle engine running, but high speed or racing still good on the highway with no EGR vacuum that EGR still close all days. I wonder the engine problem.

Check the VSV hoses installation. Reversed installation of the hose can result in vacuum not releasing after the solenoid is activated and released.

Okay, the VSV was a wrong line to reverse of connection to EGR and back around from Modulator line. EGR seem working better. But I drove the car few minute seem cause the engine stall so bad on the road. Then back home without EGR line again. I found ASV Valve air leaking louder, never heard before. It falling part, that rare part I ever heard for air condition idle-up valve replaced. Then again code 41 came out engine light. It was very low idle less then 700 rpm. Because replace ASV Valve. I move TBS for little more idle run about 900 rpm. So, it pretty misfire weird few second at warm and some time engine stall at stop traffic with EGR.

Hello guys. My car had a little trouble of erratic idling again many time after stop traffic light on the road. One day, the engine light code came out 41. It a TBS trouble again. I don't know how I doing for these test. I already replaced TBS sensor. But it doing same problem of code 41 again. Sometime engine stalling and erratic funny.

TPS was replaced last 1 mouth and connection plug look fine. I don't know of what is cause. So, I will check the wire from TPS's end connection plug to ECU Black box terminal.

The book said, Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance, between the indicated terminal pairs a (0.028 in.) Feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever, and connect the ohmmeter to terminal IDL and E2. So, I don't know what is mean "Infinity" reading for ohmmeter resistance. It about the idjusted.

Okay, I adjust the TPS is okay and I found out that I have timing light for reading rpm very low at 556 rpm. That book say must be 750 rpm with jumper terminals E1 and TE1 on the SST test connector. I adjust the stop level screw for read 755 rpm. So, that reason of rpm very low, that cause the engine stall with EGR on. Now, EGR work much better with engine idle but for awhile few minute again. It feel like again, the engine idle miss few second more then smooth, it like missing three times and then no missing, and few 5 second missing three time or less. It very wierd and no clue of where this come from. All I do everything check look fine and no engine light code at yet. My wife try tell me, "Maybe fuel filter need to change for now". I told her, " I got a test fuel gauge reading very good high pressure". Man, I don't understand all no clue.
