1994 Plymouth Sundance Fuel pump replacement

The fuel pump was replaced and fuel filter replaced. Now can't get it to start. It starts and runs as long as you pour gas in the carb but won't pick up from tank. You can hear the pump running when you turn on the key. Pulled gas line off before fuel filter and nothing comes out even when turning the engine over. Dropped the tank twice now and still can't get it. Any suggestions? I can't afford to take it to a shop.

Switch the wires on the fuel pump. It's trying to pump fuel into the tank. You won't be the first person this has happened to.

My mechanic friend said he can't switch the wires because they are different sizes? Any other suggestions? They worked on it half a day and still won't start.

If the pump is running, either the wires are switched on the motor, in the connector, or the supply and return hoses are mixed up. I recently replaced the pump in my '88 Grand Caravan and both terminals were the same size on the motor. The terminals are the same size in the connector, and even if you bought the complete assembly, there's no guarantee someone didn't mix them up at the factory.

My van didn't start either the first time. I thought I watched carefully, but I switched the two hoses by mistake. The return hose is slightly smaller diameter, but they interchanged easily. If necessary, pull both rubber hoses off the metal pipes, then see if fuel gets pumped out. If it does, switch the hoses.
