My car wont start

My car wont start and its not the battery and I do not think it is the starter? Any ideas could it be the wire? 1993 Mercury Grand marquis

I havent tested the starter. The only way I can get the car started (and this is why I dont think its the starter itself) is if I sit in the car and hold the key on and someone else is under the hood shaking and messing with the cables it will occasionly start. But you really have to beat on it almost as if it isnt connected correctly?
