What are some of the main causes for the Service Engine Light after 5 minutes?

The light only comes on after 5 minutes of driving. If the vehicle is not driven within a period of at least 30 minutes it takes the light another 5 minutes before coming on. But if stopped for a few minutes it comes back on sooner.

It is hard to say as there are many resons that it comes on. Howver the reason that it is coming on and going off is that the failing part is not quite bad enough to stay in the paramenter table that would keep the light on. It is failing intermitantly and that is why the light is going on and off.
It will aevntually faill totally.
You can go to Advance Auto ro Auto Zone and get trouble codes pulled for free.

Common codes for such symptoms are O2 sensors but guessing don't work. You need to get the codes retrieved. Yours being a pre-OBD-II model might have some problems with scan tools.
