What does a starter relay do?I am trying to figure out if one of my relays would have to cause my Truck not to crank until it cools down I have reoplaced everything accept the relays. Im told I dont have an automatic shut down relay in this truck but I have a starter relay and a fuel pump relay and some other relay. Where are these located?Any help would be appreciated.

A relay uses a small current to turn on such as what the little ignition switch can handle, and turns on a larger current needed by the starter solenoid. You do have an automatic shutdown (ASD) relay. They are on the left fender.

What are the symptoms when it doesn't crank? Do you hear the light click of the starter relay, or do you hear a much louder single clunk from the starter motor each time you turn the ignition switch to "crank"? Do the head lights or dome light stay bright or go out when you try to crank the engine? They should just dim a little bit.

No it is slow to crank when it's turning over but it eventually cranks. It has a new battery and alternator and coil new rotary button and distributor cap. Haven't replaced the starter yet.
