Last night my oil light came on after making a horrid grinding noise. It's been running a little rough for a week our two. The oil level is fine. What could the problem be? It is a 3.1 base model. I've put in all new injectors and fuel pressure regulator. New o2 sensor, crank sensor, throttle sensor, coolant temp sensor, new intake manifold gasket all done last fall. Car seemed to be running good. What could the problem be? Please help.

It sounds like you may have an internal failure in the motor. To be sure, remove the serp belt and see if the noise is still there.

The oil light is an indication of no oil pressure which is an internal motor failure.

It is not making the noise constantly. It comes and goes. It has not made the noise while I was driving just after I come to a stop at a light or something. It does it for 2 or 3 seconds and then stops. Could it be my oil pump? Or is it something worse. The car has been really well cared for just not driven much. As I sad it is a 1990 with 74k original miles. It was a to the doctor or church on sunday car and then a rarely driven second car. I know both the former owners.

I will try to see if it makes the noise without the belt. I am going to drain the oil and check for metal in the the oil as a friend recommended.

It is something worse. The oil light is the teller. There is something worse. By the time it makes noise, the damage is done.
