Where is the noise coming from?

Does braking, accelerating, coasting, uneven road conditions has any effect on the noise?

Nope. I can feel this thumping continually in all three pedals as I slow down until moving very slowly or until I stop.
I am still going to redo the clutch and wanted to know what I should look for and/or check whie I am in there.
Thanks for your reply - looking forward to the next one - Steve

I wanted to add that I am asking for advice about what to look for and/or check in the clutch-aside from this thumping noise as well-.A regular clutch replacement look-see. I have never done a clutch before.
The thumping may be a bearing of some kind, axle or steering knuckle: although both axles have been replaced in the last 70,000 as well as the upper and lower ball joints. Still wanted t have a heads up on the clutch besides this. (But also the thumping! :)
Thanks again very much for your time -Steve

If the pedals are affected, you shold be looking at the wheel bearings and brakes. Ensure the tires and rims are in good coidition with no abnormalities.

Thanks for your time.
The bearings have been checked/replaced as well as other front end parts like inner/outer tie rod ends, alignment etc. A mystery. I want to find out because I'd like to keep the car, but the front end is driving me a bit nuts.
Above and beyond this: Still would like to know what to look for in the transmission when I replace the clutch. Not for the above mentioned problem, but simple advice about what to check when installing any new clutch. I have never done so before and don't know the first thing about it - except that I am a pretty good mechanic.
Thanks very much, Steve

Did the thumping noise occur even before replacement of the aforesaid parts?

For the clutch, things that you should take notes are :

1. Flywheel. Ensure the contact surfaces for the clutch disk are even and clean. Contaminations can result in judderring when taking off from stopped positions.

2. Flywheel oil seal. Remove the flywheel and have the flywheel oil seal repaced. At such age, the seal should need replacement.

3. Ensure the clutch bearing seats and forks are clean and well lubricated prior to reinstallation.

4. Clean the main shaft splines and apply a thins layer of grease onto the splines. Rub them throughly onto the splines and wipe off excessive grease. It should be lubricated but dry in order that excessive grease does not get flung off the splnes onto the clutch disk and flywheel.

5. Wne installing the clutch disk and plate, tighten them evenly and ansure they are correctly aligned. A special tool is required but if tool is not available, install the clutch with the bolts in position and press evenly on the pressure plate and finger tighten the bolts until they are just in contact. Use yout fingers to feel the clutch from under the 3 corners at the highest position under the pressure plate and ensure the plate is as centrally positioned as possible.

Note : Ensure the disk in installed in the correct direction.
