1986 towne and country trans problem

Transmission gets stuck in second speed, but after shutting engine down and restarting, van runs fine. What is causing this and how do I repair this?

It sounds like it is going into limp mode. Have the computer scanned to see if there are any trouble codes related to the transmission. It could be a shift solenoid, sensor, trans control module.
