Hooked battery up. Wrong

Brought a new battery hooked the positive to the negative the van started smoking unhooked it. It is hooked up correctly now the van cranks up but wont start

Checkfor a blown fuse or fusible link on the starter. Those are put there to protedt systems. The fusible link is the witin connecting to the starter. You'lll see it if it 's burnt.
