Got in the truck, put the key in the ignition. Turned the key to the on position then turned it to start. The starter kicks in, turns the engine over but it doesn't start. When I take my hand off the key and it rotates back to the "run" position, the starter continues to turn. I have to turn the key to the "off" position to make it quit. I have been having an intermittent dashboard icon (see image) for the past 2 weeks. I looked it up and it's for a faulty Electronic Throttle Control, or Throttle Body. So, I go buy one and install it and the truck is still doing the same thing. Help please.

Hi,

By chance, have you checked for diagnostic trouble codes? The light you provided is for the throttle control circuit. However, it could be a few different things. By chance, did you scan the computer to see if there are diagnostic trouble codes? That is where I would recommend starting.

Here is a link explaining how to scan the can-bus for codes:

Is this something you can do? If you don't have a scanner, oftentimes a parts store will lend one to you.

Let me know.

We connected a code reader. It came back saying no codes stored.

Hi,

If the starter continues to engage when the key is in the run position, switch the starter relay with a different one having the same part number in the box to see if that stops it from happening. If that doesn't change it, the ignition switch may be failing.

Now, to get this running, we need to know if there is spark and fuel to the engine. Here is what I want you to do: See if the engine starts when using starting fluid. If it does and then stalls, we know it is a fuel-related issue. If there is no change, it is likely ignition related.

Here is a link that explains how to test for ignition spark:

Try this and let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Hey Joe, thanks so much for staying with me on this. Turns out it was the fuel pump. I have never seen a vehicle that the starter stays engaged because the fuel pump doesn't work. Which is probably why it confused me so much. Thanks so much for your help and your advice.

Hi,

The fuel pump caused the starter to stay engaged? I never heard of that myself. LOL Regardless, I'm glad to know it's fixed.

Take care and please feel free to come back anytime in the future if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe
