1995 Saturn SW1 Idle too high

Engine Performance problem
1995 Saturn SW1 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 196 miles

I have a 95 Saturn SS1 Wagon with 195,000 on it and have kept it to a tee!

All of a sudden it is idling high especially when I clutch to put the brake on. Goes to 2,000- 3,000 rpms and when it sits at just normal idle, it idles at 1-1/2...just too high.

Any ideas? Thanks.

If idle is normally 800-900 rpm and it is idleing at say 1200, it would be a malfunction in the IAC (idle air control valve) or circuit.

But an idle of 3,000rpm is either a vacuum leak or possibly a binding throttle plate.

Was there an abnormal event that caused this, like a backfire or something?

There was not a backfire but it did start to happen after a possible overfill of oil. Not a drastic overfill, just a bit. Thanks Marcy
