I have been having problem with the transmission's overdrive not staying engaged. I had started the car and was driving out of the parking lot when the engine died and the car came to an abrupt stop. The car will turn over but it seems labored and it will not start. I tested for lack of fuel by using starter fluid and it seems as if there is no spark. What could this be and what should I check next? I should ad that the Throttle Position Sensor is bad ( I checked it with my multimeter and the resistance never changes) and that the transmission, although going bad, shifts through the three primary gears fine. I also checked the timing belt and it seems to be fine with no obvious damage and rolls along as the engine turns over. The engine is a 2.4 SOHC 4 cylinder

Do you have a check engine light on? When was your last tune-up?

Cranks but no start condition:

Fuel and Spark:
Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine at least 3/16 away from ground -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it.
