1996 Other Infiniti Models 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Does the alternator belt on a '96 Infinity J30 go around the water pump also, and if it does will a bad water pump keep the alternator from charging the battery. I put a new alternator and belts on, also put a new battery in the car and it still wont hold a charge. Starts right up when we jump it then dies out, it even dies when we're driving.

Hi Mr. Butler,

If the alternator turns with the belt with engine running, it has nothing to do with the water pump.

Test the voltage at the alternator and battery terminals when engine is running, voltage should be 13.5 to 14.5 v. Do 'no load test', ie with all accessories off. Repeat with full load, AC, headlights on.

Is the battery charge indicator showing in the dash?
