Smelling gas out of the exhaust is the fact that the car was not able to burn the fuel and the valves are sucking out raw gas and pushing it down the exhaust. The not starting and then starting issue. You have referred to it not "tuns". I assume that it is not turning over all the time as in the engine doesn't seem to be able to crank the engine so the pistons go up and down thus turning it fast enough to start the engine. I wonder what you battery is like, the terminal connections on the battery, the condition of the cables, and finally the tightness of the battery connections. There still is the possibility that the starter is failing, but check out the simple stuff first.

Definetly replace the battery if it is not able to turn the engine over. I would have the battery checked first to ensure it is bad. Walmart, etc will do that for you.

Once you get the battery in it should start. But if it doesn't follow the positive battery cable down to the starter and ensure that it is snuggly attached to the starter.

Keep posting back to this and not email as the history of the posts does not stay with the email and I have a hard time following what has been done. And others can hopefully solver their issue as well.
