I own a 2000 gmc jimmy with about 93,000 miles. When I engage 4wd and start to accelerate I hear a very loud popping noise. Like its not fully engaging. The lights on the dash are on normally like they should be. I can feel the wheels grip in the front still. After getting a little more up to speed the noise stops. But when im in first gear and accelerating its pops. Its very loud. In 2wd it is normal. I used my truck to drive up to the ski resorts in new york. Its all stock. I have owned it since 71,000 miles and it has been a good truck. I want to know how to fix this problem as I dont want to be stuck in winter on the side of the road. Thanks for your help

Sounds like either a bad CV joint or tri-pot joint. It is possible that it is a bad U-joint in the drive shaft as well. A remote possibility is that the front axle vacuum is weak and causing the axle to engage/disengage as well.

I would suspect one of the joints first.

Another possibility could be the transfer case.
Some of them a large chain inside, and it could stretch, or the sprockets that it drives can be worn. Hope this helps. Mickey-d
