1998 Ford Ranger Clutch Cable

1998 Ford Ranger 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 208000 miles

After 208,000 miles of trouble free service a clutch needed replaced in this reliable vehicle. The problem that remains is reattaching the clutch cable into the transmission. All the information I can gather is a simple issue of a quick disconnect connection. It is not so simple and we can not reconnect the cable. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your assistance.
