Engine revs limited when trying to accelerate hard

Trying to merge on freeway, tachometer bounces between 3 and 4 thousand rpms and mph does not increase. Works fine with gradual acceleration.

Check for any set fault codes, a fluctuating tacho may be a faulty engine speed sensor, a scan should give you a code for this, and this would not normally set a check light.
