When my 2001 Honda Accord with 95000 miles on it is in Park, the RPMs go up and down and it sounds like the car is almost sputtering. The check engine light has also come on when this problem started to occur. Any suggestions before I go and pay $37.50 to get a auto shop to have it read on the computer?

Often times this surging can be related to a low coolant level and then air in the system which can confuse a sensor. Top off the system and bleed the air from the cooling system. It can also originate from a vacuum leak.

For less than the price of the reading you can buy an OBDII scanner. They run as low as $25 to $30. I also understand that AutoZone will read for free. I don't have an AutoZone in our community and not everyone does.

Autozone and CSK/O'Reilly (Checker, Schuck, Kragen, and O'Reilly auto parts) will do that for free.
