Emergency brake snapped

I pulled the emergency brake release thingy just now and it made a loud snap noise and now I can't get the damn emergency brake off. Is there a way to go under the hood and unhook it? I think the cable broke because there isn't any give anymore to the release lever under the dash. I have a 2002 Tahoe.

Thanks!

I really don't know the answer to that, I'll have to look it up in the book that came with the truck I guess. Does it matter?

It will to get it released, I'm expecting. What has probably happened is that when the cable broke, one or both of the rear cables are stuck in the on postions, leaving the rears parking brke on. The disc and drum have two different set ups.

You can tell by looking at them. If it looks the same in the back as the front (behind the wheels) they are disc if not they are drum in back.

Yippee! Thank you! I've been doing some searching on the net, will I have to beat the brakes with a club or something to get the damn thing to the shop? It's stuck at a coffee shop away from home. Poor thing.

Thanks for your help, in the morning I'll have to investigate the rear brakes and bring my hammer. Or a tow truck. Maybe both.

This is the area you need to access. It is where the parking brake is attached to the caliper. You should have disc brakes.

The spring on one or both side will be scrundched up to the red area. The blue arrow show the lever you need to drive forward.

Take a small/medium hammer, a couple flathead screw drivers of different sizes, or punches....but no clubs. and a blanket to lay on.
