Extreme backfiring

Car listed above is a CJ 429. The car sat 14-16 years. Starter 2-3 times but not driven (no load on engine). Take car out for spin and car ran well, then 2 miles out car starts Where to look first?

Hi,

Is it back firing through the carb or the exhaust? Take a look through this link and see if anything helps:

Let me know if that helps. Also, make sure the carburetor is tight, there are no vacuum leaks, and the carburetor isn't dumping fuel down the intake due to a stuck float.
