Probably the ECT(engine coolant temperature sensor) if it's out of range the cooling will either run all the time, or ot at all. May or may not set a codes. Is sevie engin light on?

First is the car overheating or not? if it is and your gauge is innacurate, replace thermostat, and temp sender for the gauge, if its not and gauge stays on cold replace the sender, and you will need to check if the A/C is on, this will cause the fan to run continuosly. Let me kow if it is or isnt actually overheating.

Having the same problem with my 2007 TOrrent. In addition to the engine light coming on...the A/C off...the temp guage does not move...but in very cold weather the vehicle completely shuts down. I need to pull off the bettery cable to re-set before I can start it again. It has happened a couple of times and only in really cold weather.

Iwould suggest at this point, GM(pontiac) may have a PCM update(Flash) to fix this. check with dealer.
