What are some of the reasons that a vehicle will not start in park but can sometimes get the car to crank if the gear shifter is moved through the gears. Transmission was recently replaced. The only problem that I could think of is the Neutral safety switch needing adjustment or replacement. Beyond that I am lost.

You already have the right answer. They use "range sensors" now. I've heard stories about people taking some of them apart and cleaning the sliding contact with success but some are sealed.
