Had a junk engine in 2001 Durango and put a used one in from junkyard and the used one will crank but won't start and other mechanics said it has to do with the gear tooth count that is either 12 or 16 and is there anything I can do to get around this

If he means the tooth count on the cam impulse ring then there are two options. Replace the ring with the correct one or replace the computer with the one from the yard (along with a lot of rewiring). The issue is that the ECM expects to see pulses at the correct time and count. With the wrong count it thinks the engine is in a different position than it actually is. No programming change or easy way around it.

Try resetting your security system first if no manual look online.
