Driving sixty five mph the van acted as if it was shifted into neutral. I pulled over and moved the gear selector through the gears and none would engage. Would a bad neutral safety switch cause the transmission to not engage in any gear?

More than likely this is one of two reasons. First you have a fluid issue. Either it is low or dirty to the point you are losing pressure.

Here is a guide that will help with this:

If the fluid is okay, then we have an issue with the pump inside the unit. We need to check the pressure in the unit and find out if they are correct.

If they are not, then we need to go in and rebuild the unit as you have seals leaking allowing the pressure to bleed off.

Please see the testing below and let us know what you find with this, and we can go from there. Thanks
