I been trying to figure out why my car will not start. When I turn the key lights comes on but as soon as I hit the key to start it I lose all power. Used a battery jumper nothing. I tried jumping it and lights will flicker then come on. I do not know anything about this car but last time I drove it my positive wire on my starter somehow came loose and was touching the other posted on the starter. Do I need to get a new starter or starter solenoid or what?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

What you are describing sounds like a loose or corroded connection at the battery or where the cables connect.

If the main power to the starter came loose and touched the smaller wire on the starter, it would have engaged the solenoid. If it was not constant, the starter should be okay. However, I need you to check a few things. First, the main power wire to the starter is direct. Make sure nothing melted down or was damaged on that cable.

Next, follow this link. It describes exactly what you have described.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.
