Driving home my car started to cut out. Started sputtering I gave it gas and next thing I know it backfires really bad a huge pop noise and then it shuts off. I have not been able to start it since that happened. Apparently, it is getting spark and fuel. My husband believes the timing chain jumped or possibly even broke? :( However when we have tried to start it it will crank, but not turn over or start. Then after rolling the key, a constant ticking sound comes from my carburetor for about a minute straight. Any ideas?

The ticking is a little valve in carburetor, do not worry about that. Check the compression if all cylinders read the same but under 100 psi, the chain may have slipped, also put at #1 with compression and pull distributor cap off the rotor should point at 11:30 or to #1 if not the timing chain has slipped.
