Will start and drive then cut off

Our car was in an accident a little over a year ago but still drove fine. Here recently for some reason it will start and drive about a mile up the road then cut off. Some people have told us that it could be the fuel pump but he doesn't think that's the problem. We don't really know what's wrong with it. Please help.

WHEN IT DOES THIS. WILL IT FIRE RIGHT BACK UP?

ARE YOU CAPABLE OF SOME SIMPLE TESTING, WHEN IT DOES DIE?

ELABORATE ON WHAT IT DOES/ SKIP/ JUMP/ SPUTTER/. OR JUST AN INSTANT DEATH?

No, it doesn't fire back up but it tries to and then it can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of days to get it started again. Could it be the fuel pump?

It's a smooth quite shut off. The only reason you realize it shuts of is bc the dash lights come on and you lose speed.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE TRIED

WHEN IT GOES DEAD----IMMEDIATELY SNATCH THE INTAKE AIR SNOUT OFF OF THE THROTTLE BODY AND SHOOT ABOUT A 2 SECOND BURST OF STARTER FLUID INTO THE THROTTLE BODY---SHOVE THE SNOUT BACK ON AND GIVE IT A TRY............DOES IT RUN/ TRY TO RUN BETTER THAN BEFORE?.....IF SO, THIS COULD BE A FUEL ISSUE

HERE'S ANOTHER ONE TO TRY---THIS ONE IS TO SEE IF YOU HAVE SPARK, WHEN IT DIES

SIMPLY REMOVE THE PLUG WIRE OFF OF A SPARK PLUG. THEN HOOK THIS PUPPY TO THE PLUG WIRE---THE OTHER END HOOKS BACK ONTO THE PLUG.......IF YOU HAVE "FIRE" A LIGHT LIGHTS UP IN THE TESTER. THIS KINDA DEVICE WILL KEEP YOU FROM BEING SHOCKED (LIKE WHEN DOING IT THE OLD WAY) DOING THIS IN THE SHADE OR AT NIGHT, LET'S YOU SEE A SPARK BETTER

IS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON?

DOES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT "VERIFY" IT WORKS, WHEN YOU GO TO CRANK IT UP?

Yes, one time the car won't start so he did remove that from the throttle body one time when it wouldn't crank and sprayed it and the car started. After it started he had to keep spraying it to keep it started. He said sometimes he will have the ignition on and that he will check to see if the engine has fuel and it does that other times it won't show any signs of fuel. We live in NC.

REGARDLESS---THIS IS WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO

1ST......GET IN THE CAR AND TURN ALL RACKET MAKERS OFF, WAIT FOR THE TRAIN TO PASS AND THE TRAFFIC NOISE TO STOP, HUSH UP THE YOUNGINS ................THEN TURN THE KEY TO "ON" (NOT START) DO YOU HEAR A 1-2 SECOND "HUM" OF THE FUEL PUMP?

THIS WILL "HUM" EVERY TIME YOU TURN THE KEY TO "ON"...........................................................UNLESS NO POWER IS REACHING THE PUMP....OR THE PUMP IS JUST PLAIN OLE BAD (OR GETTING THERE)

WHEN IT WILL NOT START.......CALM DOWN.....TURN THE KEY TO "ON"..........DO YOU HEAR THE "HUM" OR NOT????........WE WANNA KNOW IF THE PUMP IS OPERATING OR NOT, WHEN IT WILL NOT START

OTHER THINGS COULD BE WRONG----THIS IS A STARTING POINT........RESULTS?

A FUEL PRESSURE TEST WOULD BE A NICE TOUCH TOO!

ALSO GIMME THE EXACT NOMENCLATURE OF YOUR CAR AND THE ENGINE SIZE.....IF NEED-BE, I HAVE ACCESS TO "MITCHELL I", I CAN PULL UP DIAGRAMS OF WHERE FUSES/ RELAYS AND OTHER STUFF IS FOR YOUR CAR, SHOULD WE FIND THAT WE NEED THEM

MY MOM AND DAD HAVE AN '86 T-BIRD, BOUGHT NEW, AND STILL HAVE IT, YEARS AGO I PULLED MY HAIR OUT TRYING TO LOCATE THE RELAY TO THE FUEL PUMP.......IT WAS SORTA WELL HIDDEN IN THE TRUNK.....THE REPAIR MANUAL DID NOT SHOW IT.......I DID NOT HAVE A COMPUTER, MUCH LESS MITCHELL I !

Okay. This is what happened. He turned the car to the on but did not to start it. It did the hum. Twice and then started but when he turned the key and didn't hear the hum. The car wouldn't start. He has a fuel pump that a friend gave him but it's for a 94 Ford Pickup. He would like to know if. The shut off switch in the trunk would have anything to do with it shutting off the fuel pump where it won't start.

"HUM" MEANS THE FUEL PUMP IS/WAS RUNNING

HOW 'BOUT MR. FUEL FILTER. HAS HE EVER BEEN CHANGED?

WHEN IN DOUBT OF A "CAR PART SWAP"I GO TO ADVANCE AUTO PARTS. COM AND LOOK UP THE PART FOR EACH ONEIF THE PART NUMBERS ARE THE SAME. IT WILL WORK. IF NOT, IT'S DOUBTFUL

I DID NOT LOOK UP THE TRUCK PUMP, I'LL LET Y'ALL TRY IT OUT ON THE QUESTIONABLE PUMP

THE SWITCH IN THE TRUNK IS DESIGNED TO KILL THE FUEL IN A WRECK----RESET IT IF IT HAS BEEN TRIPPED
